چکیده

The differential reflection phase shift, Delta = delta(p) - delta(s), associated with the external reflection of monochromatic light at the surface of an absorbing medium is a monotonically decreasing function of the angle of incidence ø which is determined by the complex dielectric function epsilon. A new special angle of incidence, denoted by ø(Delta'max), is defined at which the slope Delta' = partial differentialDelta/ partial differentialø of the Delta-ø curve is maximum negative, Delta'(max), and a transcendental equation is derived that determines this angle. ø(Delta'max) differs from the principal angle ø(p) at which Delta = 90 degrees . As an example, ø(Delta'max) is calculated by numerical iteration for light reflection at the air-Si interface for photon energies hv from 1.7 to 5.6eV in steps of 0.1eV, and is plotted, along with the associated maximum slope Delta'(max), vs wavelength lambda. It is noted that ø(Delta'max)>ø(p) at every lambda, a result that may hold in general. Also, for 4.5 > 1 (e.g., for metals in the IR), Delta'(90 degrees ) is a direct measure of the extinction coefficient k = Imepsilon((1/2)).

Numerical Investigation of Birefringene Effect on the Light Reflection

In the present paper, the problem of light reflection from a birefringent medium and thin film is considered. First, the analytical equations governing the propagation of a plane and harmonic electromagnetic wave in an infinite, birefringent, linear, non-dispersive, non-absorbing, and non-magnetic medium is derived from Maxwell equations. Then, using phase matching condition and boundary condit...

THE EFFECT OF PURE SHEAR ON THE REFLECTION OF PLANE WAVES AT THE BOUNDARY OF AN ELASTIC HALF-SPACE

This paper is concerned with the effect of pure shear on the reflection from a plane boundary of infinitesimal plane waves propagating in a half-space of incompressible isotropic elastic material. For a special class of constitutive laws it is shown that an incident plane harmonic wave propagating in the considered plane gives rise to a surface wave in addition to a reflected wave (with angle o...

Wave Propagation at the Boundary Surface of Inviscid Fluid Half-Space and Thermoelastic Diffusion Solid Half-Space with Dual-Phase-Lag Models

The present investigation deals  with the reflection and transmission phenomenon due to incident plane longitudinal wave at a plane interface between inviscid fluid half-space and a thermoelastic diffusion solid half-space with dual-phase-lag heat transfer (DPLT) and dual-phase-lag diffusion (DPLD) models. The theory of thermoelasticity with dual-phase-lag heat transfer developed by Roychoudhar...

Reflection From Free Surface of a Rotating Generalized Thermo-Piezoelectric Solid Half Space

The analysis of rotational effect on the characteristics of plane waves propagating in a half space of generalized thermo-piezoelectric medium is presented in context of linear theory of thermo-piezoelectricity including Coriolis and centrifugal forces. The governing equations for a rotating generalized thermo-piezoelectric medium are formulated and solved for plane wave solutions to show the p...
